Empathy And Telemedicine

Illustration of a doctor on a screen talking to a woman. The doctor gestures warmly, while the woman listens with a hand on her chest.

Before one can truly be qualified as a doctor, they must learn how to relate to patients and their families. Without empathy, a doctor may be busy seeing patients but not truly caring for them. This can make ALL the difference to the patient’s experience of treatment—whether the care is provided in person, virtually, or at home.

In this context, empathy means your online doctor is treating you with compassion and respect. It is also putting themselves in your shoes while consulting with you virtually.

“While there may be no formal laws to enforce this, there are numerous codes of conduct and professional principles that emphasize the importance of treating patients with care and compassion.”

Telemedicine/Online Doctor, in many ways, demands more from a doctor than an in-person consultation. Unlike physical visits, where the physician can rely on proximity and direct observation, virtual care requires heightened attentiveness. A doctor must not only listen carefully but also interpret subtle cues such as body language, tone of voice, and even the patient’s surroundings on screen. This means that effective telemedicine often calls for twice the effort to ensure the patient feels truly seen, heard, and cared for.

As the American Medical Association’s Code of Ethics reminds us, “The practice of medicine requires compassion, respect for human dignity, and responsiveness to the needs of the patient” (AMA, 2024). Likewise, the World Medical Association and the UK’s General Medical Council emphasize that treating patients with care and compassion is a professional duty, not an optional virtue.

Empathy is not optional in telemedicine; it is the bridge that transforms virtual care into human-centered healing. As digital consultations continue to expand, doctors who practice with compassion and attentiveness will not only improve health outcomes but also build trust that transcends the screen
