How To Prepare For Your First Telemedicine Appointment
Now that you booked your very first appointment, there might be a few nervous breaths, because you are unsure of what to do and what to expect.
For your very first appointment, your doctor is going to do most of the work, with questions and getting your history. However, these are a few pointers on what to do.
Before The Appointment / Set-Up
Before your appointment begins, there are a few things you can do…
Double-check: This means checking to see what time your appointment is starting and whether it is on Whatsapp, Zoom, Google Meet, Skype etc.
Write down important things: Make a list with questions and anything you want your physician to help with.
Find a Location: Make sure to find a good location that is quiet, private and comfortable. Do not drive, shop, or smoke while on your appointment.
Test your technology: Run a trial to confirm your audio and video connection.
Gather health details: Make a note of every medication you have taken in the last 14 days, as your doctor would want to know. Check your temperature and blood pressure if possible.
Have a flashlight nearby.
During the Appointment
Nothing has gone wrong thus far. The meeting is in full swing. Here's what you should do.
Be patient
Pay attention, write things down.
Be assertive and clear while explaining.
Do not move around while talking.
For symptoms on your skin, use your flashlight to show it properly, If your lighting is poor.
Turn off the TV
Know the Cost and Coverage
Before your visit, confirm the cost of your telemedicine appointment. Some providers charge a flat fee, while others bill through insurance. Ask:
Is this appointment covered by my insurance?
What is the out-of-pocket cost?
Are prescriptions and follow-up visits included?
Knowing the cost ahead of time avoids surprises later.
After the appointment
Now that your appointment has come to an end. It is time to…
Review your treatment plan: repeat what you have understood so far from the doctor's instructions. You want to be sure you get it right.
Set up a follow-up appointment when necessary.
Your first telemedicine appointment doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little preparation: checking your tech, gathering your health details, and noting your questions. This way, you will be ready for a smooth, productive visit. Telemedicine is designed to make healthcare simpler, faster, and more convenient.
